It is sad that it takes something like this before security is taken seriously. I was flying on Southwest from Baltimore to Cleveland a few weeks ago and was able to get a boarding pass without anyone asking for ID or asking the standard "Did you pack your own bags, etc." questions. After I got my boarding pass at the gate, *I* asked the ticketing agent if they wanted to see my ID. I just hope that they will take security more seriously, but for how long?

I COMPLETLY AGREE WITH YOU, AND TOTALLY UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU'RE COMING FROM. AIRLINES ARE BEING MUCH TOO "LOOSE" WITH THEIR SECURITY. I REALIZE WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY, BUT ITS TIME TO PUT CAMARAS WITH LIVE BROADCAST IN THE COCKPITS. ITS TIME WE START OPENING CARRY-ON BAGS AND DOING COMPLETE SEARCHES. ITS TIME FOR PAT DOWNS AT THE METAL DETECTORS. ITS TIME TO STOP GUARDS ACCEPTING $5+ TO PASS SOMEONE THROUGH WITH OUT QUESTION. YES, MORE SECURITY WOULD CAUSE MORE HAVAC, BUT THIS WOULD PRODUCE MORE JOBS, SAFER FLYING, AND I THINK THE FEELING OF SAFETY SHOULD OVER RULE ANY RIGHT WE AMERICANS HAVE.

We as a country have become too relaxed. We have gotten in a "comfort zone". Thinking no one would have the nerve to mess with us.

Well they have woke the giant and God be with their souls when we get them. And we will.

I have flown on El-Al to Israel and the security present was greater that anything I have ever been through. Needless to say, I'm still here. What ever you may think, we do have a lot to learn from the Israelis regarding security.

This is simply a fantastic article…
THE UNITED STATES
This, this is from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.
America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian Television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

“This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britian and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of theses countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I’d like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don’t they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon!- Not once, but several times- and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone raced to the Americans in trouble? I don’t think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I’m one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those.”

Stand Proud, America!

This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that the rest of the world would realize it. We are always blamed for everything and never even get a thank you for the things we do.

I would hope that each of you would send this to as many people as you can and emphasize that they should send it to as many of their friends until this letter is sent to every person on the web. I am just a single American that has read this.

I SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ IT SOON.

I don't understand how 3-6 people *on each plane* got on with KNIVES!! Wasn't there a red flag to anyone that this is a problem? It is amazing to me that this could slide by.

I am terrified to fly to begin with, and this only reassures my thoughts. Airports need to be federally run and operated - and have the SAME standards!

Do not be so frantic about flight security.
Next time those bastards will put deadly bacteria into water distribution system or do something like this.
Terrorists think they are fighting for "cause", so their cause has to suffer a hundredfold blow every time they do an act of terrorism. This may force them to think a little.

Can someone please educate me?

I understand that there used to be Air Marshalls. If we still had them, this probably would not have happened. Can somebody explain to me why this stopped?

I think that what ever the reason for discontinueing the use of armed Air Marshalls, the practice needs to resume for 100% of all flights. 1 gun would have easily handled 3-6 knives.

For security personnel that only make $7.50 an hour , $8.00 the most if that, what do you expect? When i visited England and Paris, my luggage was visually and checked by hand, if the threat of terrorism has exsisted in the United States then why have we waited til something like this to happen to tighten Airport security. With all of the various nationalities even our own americans entering the United States we should thoroughly check everyones luggage, no matter what. No if's , and's, or but's about it. it is time for the United States to stop being so easy and keep slapping the wrist, Let the Eagle put its claws down and stop being afraid, we are the country of the Land of the BRAVE, home of the FREE, we are not just Americans, or indivuals but a human race.. PEACE TO ALL MANKIND

The armed Air Marshalls were only a temparory fix during the early 1970's until the airlines could put in place the security systems mandated by the FAA. Once these security systems were in place the Air Marshalls were grounded. Placing armed personal aboard aircraft doesn't seem like a very good idea to me. First of all if one of them fires his gun in an attempt to stop a hijacking and that bullet goes through the skin or the window of the aircraft you have what's called an explosive decompression, in other words all of the air inside the plane leaves through that hole at the same time sucking nearly everything not tied down with it, including passangers. This is deminstrated quite well by trying to pass a needle through skin of an inflated ballon. Doesn't work very well. Second, what would stop a hijacker from just grabing a passanger and using him or her as a human shield? You'd have to be a very good shot to hit someone standing behind another person and again, if you miss and hit the skin of the plane, more people die. This Air Marshall stuff just doesn't fly. We need to make sure these people don't get on the planes in the first place and that starts with better security on the ground.
