A Letter my brother Chris wrote to me. It touched my heart.
A Jersey boy's perspective

They stood tall and proud like soldiers, standing side by side like
brothers, firmly planted on the edge of the New York City skyline. They
overlooked this grand city like protectors, protectors of peace and
justice.
I would salute them whenever I drove up the jersey turnpike for I felt
that
they were saluting me. I did not know exactly why I did this but it
felt
right.
Then I thought maybe they were not saluting me at all, maybe it was
meant
for the fair lady of the river who stood just as proud. Or maybe they
stood
there day after day saluting all of America for what it represented.
Freedom
and democracy.
They became a symbol of comfort and pride to me, never wavering and
ever
present.
They represented the American way.

For many years they stood tall and proud until this fateful day
arrived. The
day was September 11th. They stood guarding the city as always when a
low
flying jet was spotted coming in fast from the north. The first tower
absorbed the impact of this mortal blow and miraculously remained
standing.
Then another plane emerged from the south and struck the second tower
with a
force that should have topple her but it too remained standing. Our
soldiers
had been hit but they would not fall. They had a duty and an obligation
to
the people of this fine city and would not falter. They were the
protectors
of thousands and would not fail now. While the life force slowly leaked
from
within they remained true and fast. They refused to be defeated.
Thousands
of lives were saved as a result of their determination to stay alive.
The
heroic efforts of many would help assist in the preservation of life on
this
day. However, eventually our brothers were overcome and collapse seemed
inevitable but not before a chance was given to a great many people to
escape. Finally, our soldiers, our comrades had fallen.

I drive up the turnpike now and dusty clouds fill the sky. A void
exists
where our soldiers once stood. I park my car off to the side of the
road and
get out. I stand tall and proud and I salute. Now there is not question
why,
it is understood. I am an American and I am proud.

I know that our fallen comrades will soon return but until then we must
fight for what they represented. We must stand true and fast as they
did and
march on. We must hold our heads up high and overcome the sadness and
sorrow. Our lives will continue but let us not forget. Let us be united
as
one and let justice prevail.

This is the way that i see it... i hope that this helps make some sense
of
the suffering we all feel.
