The death toll in a massive earthquake that struck northwest Turkey rose to nearly 7,000 Thursday as millions of people prepared to spend a third night outdoors after warnings of an increasing number of aftershocks.
Turkey's top seismologist, Ahmet Mete Isikara, warned the public to stay away from buildings, saying that 210 aftershocks had already jolted the region within three hours

My father Tom Blackwood is British and has been working for Marconi at the Golcuk naval base for the past 2 weeks. Please if anyone knows anything about him can you contact our family. All the reports we have seen have said nothing about any westerners. We have been unable to contact him and would desperately like to know that he is okay. He is 65 years old. If anyone has any news please can you contact me on (+44)7899 811575 or (+44)1727 768733.

I am a chartered struct. engineer and Principal Building Control officer in the City of London, I have had extensive experience with the dangerous structures in the bomb blasts in the City and at the Docklands. I am a Fellow of the Inst. of Structural Engeineers and a member of the Institute of Building Control Officers. I have been to Istanbul more than 33 times and know it very well. Also I speak some Turkish and know well how the buildings in Turkey are constructed. I would like to offer my help (unpaid) to go to Istanbul and give them the benefit of my advice etc. on the thousands of buildings which must now be possibly dangerous etc. etc. fax 0044 (0)181 642 6424 phone 0044 (0)181 642 3961

To Bruce Remington:

To the best of my knowledge, Kýzýltoprak is free of any earthquake damage at the time I post this mail (4.47pm local time, 08/20).

This goes out to Stephanie Wong - How can you be so cruel and uncaring? No one deserves this kind of natural tragedy to happen to them. Have you no common decency and sympathy for the men, women and innocent children who have died and have lost their entire families? They love their families as much as any others. I have never read such cruel comments. You should be ashamed.

The light of ignorance shines brightly upon one Stephanie Wong. Lets keep the use of this board for those concerned about friends and family not for those self-centered egotistical wastes of space!

Stephanie

One day you will require assistance, and I suspect it will be provided by someone with a heart - much unlike yourself.

Keep your poison to yourself.

My family will be sending $ to help those who are suffering terribly in Turkey. One world, one people.

Serious earthquake hit Turkey on the 17 th of August at 03:02 AM with a magnitude of 7.4 lasting 45 seconds killing more than 7000 people and wounding at least 20,000... The agony of not being able to help those who lie burried under piles of concrete is very strong. Thanks to all nations who are giving us a helping hand.
