Due to the earthquake in Turkey, the telephone
lines are extremely busy,and it is very diffucult
to reach out or call in. Don't panick if you can
not reach them right away. The area which is
effected by the earthquake is not a touristic
place. I hope all your relatives are fine and you

This is on the European side of Istanbul and is on the coast. By car you have to drive over an hour on a highway to get to this region from the city center. This means that, Kartal, Pendik, Maltepe, Atakoy, Erenkoy, Kadikoy etc, etc. were not directly affected. Unfortunately all the phone systems went down and are still working on and off. Along with this, because of fear of the effects of aftershocks many people do not spend much time in their homes, especially those living in apartment buildings. The whole area is still having tremors. Most people not only in Istanbul but all the way to Ankara (near the center of the country) have been spending nights outside. If you are worried about someone that you know was in Istanbul but not in Avcilar they are probably okay. I've been able to get to people in Istanbul during daylight hours without a problem and the phone system is much better today. Also please note that Izmit is not Izmir. The similarity has caused unnecessary fears for many people. Izmir was not in the range of this quake. It's much farther south. The Ankara area was not hit by the quake itself nor were most of the other touristic areas of the country. Other information that may be of use :

Other information for people who have friends touring here.
There are no reported problems with outgoing flights.
Other transportation systems in the country:
by plane - no reported problems but I doubt anyone would be able to find an internal flight right now.
by train - no problem
by bus - again there wouldn't be any problem other than delays as buses would have to go through the area that was hit by the quake in order to get to Istanbul and that area has traffic problems due to the intense rescue operations. There are delays but everyone is able to get through.

The tidal activity that caused problems after/during the quake was only reported in the area directly off the coast of Golcuk where several buildings were pulled into the ocean. This is the area that was actually hit badly in the quake.
The phone system has been down on and off so everyone probably just hasn't been able to get
in touch with you. The whole country is in turmoil as you can imagine and although I understand your distress and I do feel for you, I believe that your friends are most likely okay if they weren't in the immediate area. - Please be aware that the areas that were hit by the quake are not on the top touristic areas. It would be rather unusual for tourists to be spending time there unless they were summer guests. If you have a phone number and are really worried about someone - I'll be happy to try to get in touch with them. Please email me privately with the information. I am in the central area of the country - I've been able to locate some families but it is impossible to trace anyone in the actual quake area right now as most people who have survived have left the area and there is no order to any standard communication systems. However, most are able to get through to their relatives in other areas of the country by way of emergency phones and I've been able to locate different families in this way.
