I am German, living in the UK, and wish to say the following. Ever since sunday night I, along with millions of other Europeans and poeple around the world, have been glued to the TV praying, hoping and crying with the citizens of Louisiana and Mississippi. The force of Katrina was no one's fault, and the world watched in horror the devastation she brought. However when she had moved on, the world did not -I repeat NOT- turn off their TVs and forget about the milions who suffered. By Tuesday morning (!!!) my country (Germany), alongside France, the UK and other countries had spoken to Wahington and offered I quote 'anything you need', including troops to restore law and order, water, food and tents. By thursday, 60 (!!) nations had offered help. EVERY SINGLE OFFER WAS TURNED DOWN. The world was aghast, seeing the victims' plight. On Saturday the Government finally accepted offers. France and Germany immediately dispatched aid, both sending thousands of medical staff and facilities to feed 500,000 people each. Other countries followed their example. If only they had been allowed to do so by Tuesday evening, and so many lives could have been saved.

I am heartbroken at the loss of lives but also at the needless destruction of a city that I so dearly wished to see. A historic heritage that I dreamt of visiting ever since my teens, and that now I might not see, or if I do, then not with the lighthearted joy of a tourist. Never will I be able to delete from my mind the horrible images of suffering that I have witnessed this past week.
I pray that the people of Louisiana and other affected states will, with God's help, be able to rebuild their lives. Please rest assured that whatever you have been told, or however deserted you feel, the world is aware of your plight and our hearts went out to all of you together with our medical staff and soup kitchens that were so needlessly delayed.
