Briland Modem
Harbour Island and North Eleuthera Storm Updates
www.briland.com

Introducing the earlier-than-anticipated launch of
the Briland Modem, headquartered at
www.briland.com on the World Wide Web.  Although
we’d expected to have a few more months to
prepare, we’re taking this opportunity to host a
centralized hurricane information resource board
that will inform all friends of Harbour Island and
North Eleuthera as to the cleanup efforts
presently underway.   Please feel free to
coordinate emergency supply runs via the board.

Briland Modem is intended as a community resource
for all island homeowners, businesses, resorts,
diveshops, school and library outlets, educational
resources, historical resources, aviation and
marine resources, fishing charters, travel
information, airline connection info, expat
newsletters and … of course, an up-to-the-minute
chat room.

We look forward to working with you to develop
this community resource.  Many thanks go out to
Mandy Barton for content development assistance
and Gene Black for cool graphic support.  Feel
free to contribute a regular column, or send in
news items of interest to the island.  Please
e-mail all of your suggestions and contributions
to Kimberly at info@briland.com.

Goombay --
Kimberly King-Burns

We were to begin construction on a new cottage in a month or two, and have all the tools and supplies. I'm a licensed contractor up here (MD) and my company is the southeast distributor for roofing products and energy systems. I wish that I could afford to donate the materials -- I can at least get dealer cost on them (and am negotiating w/ my parent company for an additional break considering the circumstances). My time, tools, and expertise are free. In addition I have a 500 gpd R.O. Watermaker, 2.4kw inverter system w/ solar & wind, combination saw, 2 compressors, 4 nail guns, chainsaw, and many other carpentry/construction tools. I have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of light to medium consruction, 16 years of experience in boat restoration (including "totalled boats"), and expert knowledge in roofing systems. I should also mention that my partner and lead carpenter is currently in Marsh Harbour helping out, and in two weeks I will be able to bring down 2 more people capable in all areas of construction. All we'll need is room and board (or we can bring tents).
I am planning to fly down in a week or so to assess the damage to our own property but will be able to stay to help out. Because of the weight of tools and materials (and the problems at MH airport), I am looking for someone going over on a boat. I am willing and capable crew or copilot. I will also need a little lead time for purchasing/coordinating materials and tools shippments to an Abaco-bound boat. Please contact me if you know of anyone going over or other ways that I can be of help. email: @aol.com">ecolrw@aol.com or call home office at: 1-888-850-6665.
Sincerely, Lewis Woodward

My brother-in-law paid a visit to TC last week and looked at our condo, 2119 Atlantis in unit 5.
All doors, both patio and front were still intact, water to a depth of 18'' or so had been in the property but appears to have drained away. Carpets probably a bit soggy!
Roofs and structure generally in good condition, some shingles missing.
A lot of jetsum, seaweed and timber in the entrance hallways and on patios. All A/C units probably ruined by seawater.
Other units seemed to be in a similar condition although units in the first block were affected more, no real details though.
Ray Pearlson on site and we are hoping for an update soon.

Just returned from Lubbers. All houses looked ok. The island is a mess. Most casuarinas are down. Many other trees too. Houses at low elevation may have some water damage, but overall everybody fared pretty well. All docks are gone

I had a conversation with Sen. Harken (IA) this morning. If you don't know, he is a homeowner on Elbow Cay. He told me that he has been in touch with the US Ambassador to the Bahamas, Arthur Schecter, since the hurricane. The State Department had their Office of Disaster Assistance send some water and other supplies into the Bahamas immediately. They then did several overflights to provide the Bahamas with an assessement of damage, etc. The aid cost the US $300K. The State Department has completed this task and no more funding, assistance is forthcoming from this unit.

However, Sen. Harken did make contact with the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) who can go into the Bahamas and render substantial logistical and financial aid. However, the Bahamas MUST request this assistance from the US. The offer has been made to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Bahamas today (9/20) via the US Embassy in Nassau. The offer was "taken under advisement." No word yet as to whether the Bahamas government will be willing to accept relief from the US.

Sen. Harken said the US can/will do nothing if the Bahamas government does not request it.
