The mines last week claimed their 125th casualty in Albania when Adem Sopi, 25, trod on a mine and lost his leg. Twelve people have been killed by Serb mines in Albania since the Kosovo conflict began two years ago.

PRISHTINA - A Kosovo Albanian shepherd was abducted by three Albanian men who released him after three hours with his hands tied behind his back and a grenade attached to his hands, UN police said Thursday.

The man was snatched while herding sheep in the village of Plava, near the southern town of Prizren. He was taken into Albania, three kilometres (two miles) away, before being freed, bound and rigged to go off.

“He was told the grenade would explode if he untied his hands,” United Nations police said in a statement.

The man made his way back to his home in Kosovo and asked a relative to take him to a UN police station, where explosive experts from the international KFOR peacekeeping force removed the grenade and untied his hands.

No motive for the attack was given, though crime is generally high in the UN-administered province.

NEAR GROZNY, Russia, April 28 (AFP) -

Russian soldiers stationed outside Grozny on Friday confirmed to AFP that they had suffered casualties during a battle in the
rebel capital on Thursday.

Top Chechen spokesman Movladi Udugov earlier told AFP that 14 Russian troops were killed during a shootout in the rebel
capital, the worst single reported death toll in the city since Grozny fell to the Russians in early February.

The Kremlin flatly dismissed the report.

However interior ministry troops stationed just outside the city confirmed that a battle had erupted near Grozny's eastern
suburb of Khankala on Thursday, just as Udugov had claimed.

The soldiers said that several Russian troops had been killed, although they gave no precise figure.
