Personally, I believe 98% of the films they release are artistically deificient. I also believe the Blair Witch Project was a farce. I missed the entire goal of the movie. I may have been misled by the reviews citing that the movie was indeed "scary".
The artistic spririt was bound to become exploited by the aims of commerce. It was only a matter of time and the manner of progression does not exclude negative consequences from occuring.
Your opposition to the "American way" parallels mine. However, we cannot continue to bash and probe every negative aspect of this system. Some artists are attempting to escape the pitfalls of commerce by establishing other outlets of exposing their artistic expression. However, must an artist or contributor of culture starve to death or gain posthumous fame? Of course, the artist must not become a pawn of a corporation as well. A level of equilibrium must be achieved.
When we speak of contriubtions to culture, do we mean past or present? Because if we speak in past terms I can list quite a few cultural innovators from the United States. However some accademics over here think that after the initial military push to crush the chechen 'Army', the clean up operation might not be as simple as you make out. Predictions include that they will withdraw into the hills,leaving Russian troops to fight an uphill battle (lit.+ fig.). Another scenario, they withdraw over the border into Dagastan or even further afield and conduct a hit and run terror campaign.

As far as refugees are concerned if what you say is true, Russia could do better in the media relations war. Was the press restricted as they claimed, or were they afraid to go in? When not even the BEEB can get there, something has to be wrong.
Another question, there are NGO's in Kosovo,apparently just waiting for the word from Russia,to move into Ingushetia, to support the Refugees. Why aren't they getting in?

Of course America has a "Culture" in the general sense of the word. Unfortunately it is a culture that seems to be more about supplying the consumer than exploring the human creative spirit.
It is also exceedingly exportable, to the cost of home grown talent in the rest of the world.
Hollywood has become about big box office success films, that have marginalised more thoughtful film makers in other parts of the world. (Including Europe). Even within the US, films aimed at a more serious market are marginalised. The same with TV stations, those that stay in business are the ones that cater to the largest audience. I believe this is known as dumbing down.
The music industry is dominated by English language artists. (Latin America and Africa have a huge pool of talent, that gets no airplay in the West.)
What else does America export Coca cola- makes your teeth rot, humburgers- make you fat.
Oh yeah, there's snowboarding and other extreme sports. Great fun, shame about the marketing hype that goes with them. Microsoft- I rest my case.
