Russia says two dead in latest Chechen rebel attack

MOSCOW, May 28 (Reuters) - Russian officials confirmed on Sunday that one of their checkpoints outside the Chechen capital Grozny had been attacked by rebels but said the death toll was far lower than that given by the guerrillas.

Rebel spokesman Movladi Udugov said on Saturday that the attack on the check point had claimed the lives of 16 Russian OMON paramilitary police.

But Russian news agencies quoted the military press service, based in the Khankala base outside Grozny, as saying that only two OMON members were killed and several wounded.

The attack was in the Zavodskoi district on Saturday evening on the edge of Grozny and lasted for around 30 minutes. The military said that many rebels were killed, although Udugov had said none of the separatists died.
