The principal causes of the war were the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas; claims against the Mexican government by U.S. citizens who had been injured or had property damaged during the frequent Mexican revolutions of the period;

After the failure of diplomatic attempts to settle these issues, the Congress of the United States declared war on Mexico in 1846. United States armies invaded northern Mexico and occupied New Mexico and California, and a blockade was established along both Mexican coasts.

Mexico refused to acknowledge defeat. The United States decided to send an expedition to end the war by capturing Mexico City;

Afterward, both Vera Cruz and the castle of San Juan d'Ulloa, located in the city's harbor, were besieged and constantly bombarded for nearly three weeks by both land and naval forces. Finally, on March 29, 1847, after severe casualties had been inflicted on both the military and civilian population, Vera Cruz capitulated.

Mexican American lost their land holdings to Anglos by means of US legal means, land sales brought on economic distress, land seizures, and fraud and force.
