Look to the states of eastern europe and central asia. Those that have been most successful are the ones that have introduced economic,political
and legislative changes quickly and decisively.
This has involved tight monetarist policies set by the IMF and other financial institutions and
economic restructuring that has hurt the ordinary citizens of those countries the most.
Does chechnia have the kind of leaders who can bring about such changes whilst maintaining political stability?
This is not a retorical question.

Please elaborate on your comment.You have spent so much time and energy attacking people, that I
haven't been able to work out what your opinions are in this debate. I am actually interested in what YOU have to say.

Having read my message back,it is holier-than-thou, that is the only response Ican make to the garbarge I read on this site yesterday. Having received email from various people, I now realise that there are some human beings out there. As one person wrote "You would think that the world was a horrible place"

And I realise that sitting in my safe little western "democracy" it is easy for me to be ideolistic.The question is are you capable of
"seeing the wood for the trees"?

During the Afghan war I came into contact with many of the Afghan fighters who came to London for medical treatment. From the stories they told,I came to view Russians as monsters, until I travelled to the Soviet Union in 1991,where I met the 19 year old kids who had been in Afghanistan doing the politburo's dirty work. I also witnessed
the courage of the 16 year olds who stood in front of Russian tanks in Kaunas(Lithuania)and the
of the ordinary people whose faced the Army in Moscow. (That was quite a holiday for me,I tell you So don't preach about reality madame Snowperson.)

The point and there is one, is that all this war shite comes from above. Suits in offices,trying to
save their political rear-ends. The first requirement when going to war- dehumanize the opponent. And we just buy into it,put our own
bigotted slant on it. And that we call "reality".
"Can't do a ••••••• thing to change it."
There are no easy solutions, everyone has vested
interests,everyone is right, everyone is wrong.

Serbia was a ••••••• shambles,but where the hell
was russia. Some ancient understanding was more important than preventing genocide. In the end the
Kremlin's actions seemed little more than an exercise in propping up Yeltsin and I'm sure the western leaders were equally complicent in that.
(Did we learn nothing from Tchechoslovakia in 1936!)

In the end there will have to be a political solution in Chechnia, in the end someone will have to pay to rebuild it(most likely the long suffering russian citizens and the IMF).

I am probably a fool to believe that we as human beings can find a better way of solving these conflicts than spreading depleted uranium over
dispair and suffering,and what I read yesterday
confirms that.
Even so, with the media coverage being what it is today, having studied east european and Russian politics,economics and history and as the mother of a beautiful 3 year-old boy, I make no apologies for hanging onto hope and not turning my back on dying children.
