APPEAL

"Little drops of Water, Little grains of Sand,
Make a mighty ocean and a pleasant land
Little deeds of kindness, Little words of Love,
Will make this earth an eden, like the heaven above"

Devastated by the super-cyclone, 10 districts of Orissa have been severely affected. We have suffered a great loss in terms of life and property. With more than 20,000 deaths, millions affected, loss of live-stock, cattle, grain, destruction of flora and fauna, Orissa faces irrevocable resultant damage.

Relief in the form of cash and funds is pouring in from India and abroad. But whatever we do seems to be like a drop in the ocean. We appeal to you to help our organisation - Arupa Mission Research Foundation to carry out relief duties in OParadip and Jagatsingpur (the most affected areas). Having adopted these areas we are reaching out to the affected, distributing food and medicine, clothes, kerosene and other basic relief material. Above all, our organisation is mobilising people to help in mass burials and burning of dead bodies to prevent the spread of the epidemic, which is already taking root. Help us to help the devastated, Help us to "rehabilitate" those who survived. Blessings to you.
Arupa...
Registered Number 1729
Surya Nagar
Bhubaneshwar -751
003 Orissa
India
Tel 0091 674-405157/417383
Fax 0091 674 430324
email: arupananda@mailcity.com

-Not since the famine of 1866 A.D. which took 1.5 lakh lives Orissa faced with a calamity of this magnitude.
-Loss of life in this cyclone, then the food shortage and epidemic which is started
is not calculated so far.
-Millions have been left without home or belongings.

-Till now, 07 Nov 1999, No reports from the 60% of the affected areas due to lack of communications.
-Orissa Finance Minister thinks Rs. 500,000 crore will be needed to revive the Orissa state's economy.
-10 of 12 affected districts of Orissa are the granary of Orissa in terms of both food and cash crops.
-The standing paddy crop of 320,000 hectares of cultivated land has been completely devastated.
-Those paddy fields damaged by sea waves up to 15 feet high will not be able to cultivate for 5 to 6
years.
-90% of cattle of the affected districts has perished.
-Assuming one hectares produces 2 tonnes of food grain, 600,000 tonnes of food grain perished.
-In near future, there will be huge unemployment since 80% of the local population live on agriculture.
-Almost all of the coconut trees uprooted. It will take 15 years for the coconut trees to reach the fruit-
bearing stage.
