Russian retreat imminent. Russia must withdraw before end of this month to save its Army from total annihilation. No Lebed will come this time to rescue the Vodka Army.

Chechen rebels ambush Russian troops again

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Chechen rebels ambushed Russian troops again Tuesday, the latest in a series of hit-and-run raids that have raised fears of an unwinnable quagmire in the separatist province.

Konstantin Makeyev, deputy to Russia's Chechnya spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky, told Reuters two soldiers had been killed and an unspecified number of others injured when a single vehicle was struck in an ambush. He did not say how many soldiers had been riding in the vehicle.

``It was not a column. The vehicle was driving alone and came under fire in an ambush,'' he said. ``There was no battle as such. It lasted only a few seconds.''

But rebel spokesman Movladi Udugov told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location that two armored troop carriers and a light vehicle had been wiped out and 17 Russian soldiers killed in the ambush near the village of Bachi-Yurt.

He said another Russian column was later dispatched to the area of the ambush and clashed with rebels atop nearby Alleroi Ridge. About 30 more Russians and five rebels were killed in the second wave of fighting, he said.

The Russian military has come under domestic pressure over the past month as the casualty toll from Chechen hit-and-run strikes has risen.

Nineteen servicemen were killed in an ambush last week in the neighboring Ingushetia region, raising fears that the fighting could spread beyond Chechnya's borders.

92 TERRORISTS INVOLVED IN BLASTS IN MOSCOW, BUINAKSK, VOLGODONSK AND OTHER CITIES PUT ON WANTED LIST

Ninety-two terrorists involved in carrying out explosions in Moscow, Buinaksk, Volgodonsk and other Russian cities have been put on the Wanted List, including 81 people on the international wanted list, and on the Interpol lists, too. These figures were cited at today's briefing in the Interior Ministry of Russia by Major General of the militia Valery Beyev, deputy head of the main criminal investigation department. The General stressed that the "acuteness of the terrorist threat is on the uprise in the country." According to the law enforcement department, in 1998, 17 acts of terrorism were committed in Russia with the use of explosive devices, taking the toll of 32 people, whereas in 1999 the number of acts of terrorism had gone up to 33, including 8 - in Moscow, 6 each in Daghestan and Karachayevo-Cherkessia, and 5 - in Northern Osetia. They have claimed altogether 373 lives.

The General noted that beginning with 1995, 128 people were put on the Wanted list for committing acts of terrorism. As many as 36 terrorists were arrested and 92 put on the Wanted list, of whom 81 are on international Wanted lists.

The General said that they arrested in Moscow, jointly with the FSB, 3 people on suspicion of carrying out the blasts in Moscow last September, while three others were put on the Wanted list. The same number of people were detained and put on Wanted lists in connection with the blasts in Buinaksk and Volgodonsk.

Valery Beyev stressed that to avert the threat of acts of terrorism in places of large concentrations of people, the main traffic routes and in other places, the number of operational and search groups with specially trained dogs has been increased. This has made it possible to prevent 5 acts of terrorism in Krasnodar Territory, in Kostroma and the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport already in the current year. At the same time the Interior Ministry spokesman admitted that the clear-up rate of acts of terrorism in Russia does not exceed 10 per cent.
